Keswick is in the northern part of the Lake District National Park and its most important tourist and accommodation centre. Having been a market and mining town, it was transformed into a tourist town by the Victorians. The arresting Moot Hall (town hall), on an island site in the main street, dates from 1813. The town museum has manuscripts by Wordsworth, Southey and others as well as fine paintings, some by Turner and Steer.
