Kirkby Stephen Hotels

Kirkby Stephen is situated in hill country in the east of Cumbria, south east of Appleby-in-Westmorland. It was Calor Village of the Year for England in 2009, Northern England Village of the Year in 2009
, Cumbria Village of the Year in 2008
and Cumbria in Bloom Best Large Village/Small Country Town in 2008. In this large village/small town, the layout of the Market Square and surrounding houses developed after the granting of the market charter of 1352. Much of the town is a conservation area now with largely 18th and 19th century buildings on the bases of older thatched wattle and daub houses. Narrow entrances and lanes were constructed to protect the townspeople from Scottish raiding parties in this border area. In the town centre there are two hotels, one a former 17th century coaching inn. Other hotels are located in the surrounding countryside and nearby villages such as Brough and Ravenstonedale.
