Coniston HotelsConiston is a peaceful village that sits between Coniston Water and the Coniston Old Man fell with a gentle pace of life. Grisedale Forest is on the hills between Coniston and another charming village, Hawkshead, partway to Windermere in the east. The village is known for Coniston Water, which was the setting for Arthur Ransomes story the Swallows and Amazons. Sadly it is also the site of the tragic death of Donald Campbell during his world water speed attempt in 1967. The Victorian steam yacht Gondola cruises five miles up and down the Water carrying visitors between April and October. Coniston has hotels and inns in the village and in nearby hamlets like Torver and Satterthwaite. Some Coniston hotels are also situated next to Coniston Water.
