Carlisle B&B
Carlisle is a city in the County of Cumbria close to Gretna Green and the border between England and Scotland. The administrative area has a population of over 100,000 but many of these live in a rural rather than a city environment. Carlisle itself, the largest settlement, is located on the flood plain of the River Eden. Originally a Roman outpost on Hadrians Wall, it was part of Scotland until colonised by William II of England in 1092. He built Carlisle Castle. The cathedral was founded in the 12th century. It is linked to England by the M6 motorway and to Scotland by the A74(M) and M74. At the centre of routes into the Lake District National Park, Southern Scotland and Northern England including the east coast and Northumberland, Carlisle makes a good base for a holiday or a stopping off point en route to elsewhere. It is well equipped with a variety of accommodation types including many bed and breakfast (b&b) establishments. These may be hotels, inns and public houses, guesthouses and b&bs which include private houses, cottages and farm houses.
