Lake District Tourist Guide - Local Information
Getting Out and About
Tourists who come to London often spend so much time exploring the city that they forget that there is even a country out beyond the M25. As the first country in the world to invent the steam engine, Britain has fantastic rail connections and you can get just about everywhere from London via train in relatively quick time.
The Lake District is one such location, Euston to Oxenholme is a direct train with no changes and takes just over two hours. So, if you're in London for a week or so, why not get out and about for a day or two.
London
If you're taking a break in the capital, and you can afford it, there's only one part of the city to stay in: Mayfair. The capital's finest collection of hotels are found in the place made famous for being the dark blue square on the lottery board. With easy transport connections, a relaxed atmosphere, and top class service, it makes a great London base, and if you do some research you can get great deals (check out their Mayfair hotels, London selection online) through the likes of Millennium Hotels.
The Lake District
Book your tickets in advance and a round trip to the Lake District will cost less than fifty pounds. For your effort you get to enjoy the finest landscapes that the British Isles has to offer, and a true taste of British hospitality. Oxenholme is the easiest train station to get to from the capital, and from there it's just a short hop to Windermere, and the most famous of the lakes.
The Lake District is absolutely stunning, but frequently buffeted by high winds, so make sure you take some good walking gear with you. That said, if you want to do just a bit of sightseeing, but not too much walking, you can hop from tea room to pub to tea room and pass a wonderful day.
Stratford-on-Avon
You could, of course, always head directly back to London, it would make a long day, but you could day trip it. A better option would be to stop over in the Lake District and then pass an afternoon in Stratford on the way back through. Stratford is, of course, famous for being the birthplace of Shakespeare, and is a beautiful little known with a rich history. Definitely worth a quick visit before you head back to the luxury of your London hotel.
