Lake District Tourist Guide - Local Information

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Mountain Film Festival

Many separate events take place in the Lake District throughout the year. For example: in November every year a prestigious Mountain Film Festival is held in Kendal. It is an international festival with a huge programme of films, lectures and entertainment. See www.mountainfest.co.uk/.

William Wordsworth Book Festival, Winter School and Summer Conference

In January, the William Wordsworth Book Festival is held in Grasmere for authors, artists and collectors. See www.wordsworth.org.uk/events/index.asp?pageid=404. Also held in Grasmere in January, the Wordsworth Winter School and, in June, the Wordsworth Summer Conference. See www.wordsworthconferences.org.uk/.

Coniston Powerboat Records Week

In a sporty rather than arty vein, in November, look in at the Coniston Powerboat Records Week, www.conistonpowerboatrecords.co.uk.

Many events are run by organisations like the National Trust, the National Park Authority, the Wildlife Trust or by other groups or individuals.

The Lake District National Park Authority

The Park Authority arranges both Guided Leisurely Walks and the more challenging Hill Walks, led by a local expert. They also give Talks and Slide Shows and have Special Interest Events. There are events especially designed for Families and Children and many Shows and Festivals. Check out www.lake-district.gov.uk/index/enjoying/event.htm. Maps of the area, villages and towns can be found in a Document Library.

The National Trust

The National Trust website can advise on the multitude of events at their properties. Go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-events.htm and be taken to a page 'What's On Around the Country. There you can click on 'find an event near you now'. Then in Step 1 enter Area: North West; County: Cumbria and then the property if you know it. Step 2 allows you to enter a Theme, such as Food and Cookery and a Special Theme, such as Farmer’s Markets. In Step 3 you can enter your dates.

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust is devoted to the conservation of the wildlife and wild-places of Cumbria, in partnership with 47 local Wildlife Trusts across the UK. The Cumbria Trust has over 40 nature reserves, campaigns for the protection of endangered habitats, e.g. limestone pavements and species, e.g. red squirrels. It also helps adults and children discover the importance of the natural world. See www.cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk. Click 'What you can do' and then 'Come to an event' to find out what is happening in the world of wildlife.

To help plan your visit check out a selection of Windermere hotels.
