AlstonCottagesOn the edge of Cumbria, Alston is a north Pennines town in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is considered to be the highest market town in England. Reputed for locally made produce such as Cumberland Mustard and Alston Cheese, it has been the location of TV productions such as Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Historically, the area was mined for lead, silver, zinc, coal and fluorspar. The awesome Roman Hadrians Wall is an attraction close by. There is plentiful self-catering accommodation in the Alston area, more in the surrounding countryside than in the town perhaps, where farm or estate buildings have often been converted into cottages. On some sites more than one Alston cottage is available so two or more can be rented to accommodate a larger group. Former farmhouses are also for rent in some cases. The area is mostly sheep farmed and has fine open views across the countryside. |
