Alston B&B

Alston is small town of about 2,000 people on the eastern edge of Cumbria at an unusually high elevation, 300 metres above sea level.
Situated where the South Tyne joins the River Nent, it is a tranquil town in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Pennine Way, the Pennine Cycleway and close to the Coast to Coast cycle route (C2C). Alston makes a good holiday centre for a b&b holiday. Shopping in the small town with cobbled streets and 17th century buildings is surprisingly good for its size. There are also a number of artists studios and potteries and other places of interest. Largely moorland, the nearby farms mostly rear hill sheep but many also offer accommodation by running bed and breakfast establishments. Other Alston b&bs can be found in the town. The town has been used as a location by a number of TV productions including Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. In the past, the area was mined for lead, silver, zinc, coal and fluorspar. Hadrians Wall and the Ashgill Falls are close by, while the nearest towns are Haltwhistle and Brampton.

The A 686 from Penrith in Cumbria to Corbridge in Northumberland, which passes through Alston, was chosen by the AA Magazine as one of their 'Ten Great Drives'.
